Siblings Empty
PostSubject: Siblings   Siblings EmptySun 11 Oct 2009, 2:06 am

This one is for the siblings of kids with ASD.

My youngest son, Leo, is only five and, whilst he does get very annoyed with his brother's constant noise and repetition he is a little star.

He takes the time to play with Oscar and has even let OScar teach him some maths, even though Leo would rather be off somewhere with his action figures. The best thing about Leo though, is his patience. When Oscar has a meltdown at home Leo just stays out of the way until it's over which is easy enough at home but when Oscar has a melt down in public Leo will just stand by, quietly. He never runs off or makes a fuss, he always waits patiently for me to deal with Oscar.

That's not the extent of his patience though, even though Oscar has been quite violent to Leo when he has been in meltdown and has said some really nasty things to him, once Osc has calmed down we get him to apologise to his brother and every time, without fail, Leo just says "no worries" and gives him a big old hug.

And, of course, when Osc isn't in melt down the two of them get on famously.

It must be really tough to have a sibling with ASD, especially when you're so young, but Leo really shows a level of understanding and compassion that astounds me.

And here they are, getting on famously (Leo is on the right).
